Kelah Sanctuary” is located at Sungai Petang, 21 kilometers from Pengkalan Gawi which is 40 minutes by speed boat. Sungai Petang, with an area of 407 hectares streches for 20 kilometers long-10 kilometers within the Taman Negara with 91 streams flowing ito it mainly from Gunung Padang (1,314m)- the highest peak in the territory, Kelah Sanctuary, covering an area of 4,464 hectares has been gazetted as a protective zone for the protection, preservation and reproductions of the fresh water fish in Tasik Kenyir.
Kenyir lake. To find out more about adventures at Tasik Kenyir, click on the National Park tasik kenyir, one would have to take a speed boat ride to Sungai Petang. It takes about an hour or more to get there. At the rivermouth (Sungai Petang and the lake), there is a ranger’s floating office where visitors are required to register themselves. Note…if you decide to visit this Kelah sanctuary, you are actually required to obtain written permission from the Ketengah office.
This is an utmost step in ensuring the maintainance of the bio-diversity of the lake. Therefore fishing activities are strictly prohibited here.
Visitors will be enjoying an experience they will never forget....seeing the nature at it's best with the magnificient sparkling rivers and rapids along the tracks to Kelah Sanctuary. Visitors will also experience 'close encounter' with various species of fishes including the beautiful red kelah gently biting at their feet while swimming in the magnificient Kelah Sanctuary.
Getting There
If driving from Kuala Lumpur. take the Karak Highway to Jerangau-Jabor Highway to reach Ajil and onwards to Kenyir. Alternatively take the Karak Highway to Kuantan and along the coastal road through Kemaman. Dungun, Kuala Terengganu and subsequently to Tasik Kenyir. Express buses also provide daily services to Kuala Terengganu at 900 am, and 9.00 pm. from Hentian Putra Bus Terminal in Kuala Lumpur.
Malaysia Airlines (MAS) - from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA ) and Air Asia - from Low Cost Caner Terminal (LCCT) operates regular flights to Kuala Terengganu.
From Sultan Mahmud Airport you can take a taxi direct to Tasik Kenyir.
